Before you take off
- This is a preparation aid, not an authorisation. It relies on the permanent map and covers neither temporary restrictions nor the weather.
- A flight is prepared: check the restrictions of the day, the state of your equipment, and declare your flight when the regulation requires it.
- The people around you did not choose your flight. A drone is noisy and intrusive: move away, explain what you are doing, and give up when the situation calls for it.
- Filming means processing data: gardens, windows, plates and faces fall under privacy and image rights, even from public space.
Individual or professional: what actually changes
In the Open category, the flight regulation makes no difference: zones, maximum height, the ban on flying over people and the duty to keep the drone in sight are identical, whether you fly for fun or for a client.
What changes is your status. Professional use implies registering as an operator, suitable insurance and traceability of your flights. Above all, a mission that leaves the Open category — beyond sight, over people, in a populated area — moves into the Specific category, with a scenario, an authorisation and a declaration.
What this tool does not tell you
The map queried is the permanent restriction map. It is updated on a monthly cadence and describes what normally applies at a given spot.
It therefore contains no temporary bans, no events and no ad-hoc reserved areas. Before a real flight, also check the restrictions of the day, the weather and the landowner’s agreement.

Can I fly my drone in my garden?
Yes, if your garden is not in a restricted zone and you follow the general rules: keep the drone in sight, stay under 120 m, never fly over people or other people’s property. Enter your address above to check your area.
Do I need permission from the town hall to fly a drone?
Not systematically. A municipality may however regulate the use of public space, and some zones require the agreement of a specific authority. The map states when an authorisation is needed and who grants it.
How high can I fly my drone?
120 metres at most as a general rule, and often less: many zones impose a ceiling of 30, 50 or 100 metres. The height that applies at the checked spot is shown with the verdict.
Can I fly a drone in a city?
Flying over built-up areas is possible but tightly framed, and flying over people is forbidden. Many cities are also close to an aerodrome, which sharply limits the permitted height.
Does this tool replace a pre-flight check?
No. It gives the permanent situation of a place from the official source, but covers neither temporary restrictions nor the weather. Pre-flight verification remains the remote pilot’s responsibility.
Do I have to register my drone?
Registration covers the operator, not the aircraft. It is mandatory from 250 g upwards, and as soon as there is a camera whatever the mass. In France it is done on AlphaTango, the DGAC portal; it is valid for five years and can be extended. The number obtained must be displayed on the drone.
Do I need a licence to fly a drone?
There is no drone “licence” as such. From 250 g upwards, online training is required in the Open category, and it is free. Flying closer to people (subcategory A2) requires a further exam, and anything outside the Open category falls under the Specific category.
