Paid registration, which is rare
Under fifty euros for three years, where France, Switzerland or Poland offer it for free. Anyone arriving with the habit of free registration does not expect an invoice.
The same portal carries the remote pilot licence and the geozone map. So it is not only a register, it is where an Austrian mission gets prepared.

Open an operator account
The account is opened in the name of the person or company answering for the flights. The number issued goes on the aircraft.

Registration is charged and lasts three years. It is the one step that surprises an operator coming from a country where it is free.

The geozone map lives on the same portal. Austria is mountainous and holds many protected areas: checking is not a formality.

Does my registration from another EU country count?
Yes. European rules provide a single registration, in the state where the operator lives or is established, and that number is valid across the Union. dronespace is for operators established in Austria.
Why Austro Control and not a ministry?
Austro Control is the Austrian air navigation company, and it holds the authority over uncrewed aircraft. The portal is therefore run by an aviation operator, not by a ministry.
Can the remote pilot licence be obtained there too?
Yes, the portal carries training and examination for the open categories alongside registration.
