WingtraRAY
WingtraRAY: VTOL fixed-wing drone covering 550 ha per flight, PPK precision topography and LiDAR surveys. Specifications, use cases and EASA compliance.
WingtraRAY: Large-Scale Mapping Without Compromise
The WingtraRAY is a VTOL fixed-wing drone designed for large-scale mapping and topography missions. It combines the advantages of a fixed-wing aircraft — long endurance, large area coverage, low energy consumption — with the flexibility of a multirotor: vertical take-off and landing, no runway required. A single flight can cover up to 550 hectares at 120 metres altitude, with a ground sampling distance of 2 cm/px.
The WingtraRAY succeeds the WingtraOne and natively integrates a dual-frequency PPK GNSS receiver, enabling 3 cm vertical RMS accuracy in post-processing without ground control points. It meets the requirements of professional topographic surveys.
Technical specifications
VTOL fixed-wing architecture
The WingtraRAY takes off and lands vertically (multirotor phase), then transitions to horizontal gliding flight (fixed-wing phase). This transition gives it energy efficiency impossible for a pure multirotor, while eliminating the runway or catapult constraints of traditional flying wings.
- Endurance: 59 min in RGB configuration, 45 min in LiDAR configuration
- Weight: ~3 kg — portable by one person, deployable without infrastructure
- Autonomous landing: repeatable accuracy below 1 metre on the departure point
Hot-swap payload system
Sensors swap between flights without tools, in seconds:
RGB sensor — 61 megapixels (Sony RX1R II) 1 cm/px ground resolution at 60 metres, adjustable obliquity for 3D modelling. Ideal for orthophotos, cadastral plans and urban photogrammetry.
Multispectral sensor — 5 spectral bands Blue, green, red, RedEdge and NIR with integrated radiometer for automatic radiometric correction. Essential for NDVI, NDRE maps and agronomic monitoring.
LiDAR Dense point cloud down to ground level, even under canopy. Planimetric accuracy ±10 cm. Applications: forest surveys, infrastructure corridors, digital terrain models below the tree line.
Integrated PPK — centimetre accuracy without GCPs
The dual-frequency GNSS receiver logs raw position data for post-flight correction (PPK). Post-processing achieves 3 cm RMS vertical accuracy without ground control points. For regulatory surveys, this significantly reduces field time.
Professional use cases
Mapping and orthophotography
The WingtraRAY produces georeferenced orthophotos directly usable in Pix4D, DroneDeploy, Agisoft Metashape or QGIS. Deliverables — orthophoto, DSM, DTM, point cloud — comply with professional mapping standards.
Topography and volume calculation
Quarry cubatures, material stockpiles, earthwork surveys — PPK accuracy enables volume attestation within tolerances compliant with professional surveying standards, without deploying ground targets.
Precision agriculture
With the multispectral sensor, the WingtraRAY covers several hundred hectares in one session. NDVI and NDRE maps feed agronomic prescription software for variable-rate management (fertilisation, irrigation, crop protection).
LiDAR corridor and forest surveys
Surveys under tree cover require an active sensor (laser) to reach the ground. The WingtraRAY in LiDAR configuration produces reliable terrain models for forest inventories, power line surveys and hydrological studies.
Regulatory compliance
The WingtraRAY operates under Specific category according to EASA UAS regulations:
- Remote pilot: specific qualification required (theoretical + practical)
- Flight authorisation: required per mission profile (BVLOS, populated areas)
- Flight plan: mandatory for precision operations with PPK
- Liability insurance: professional coverage mandatory for all commercial missions
Find a certified WingtraRAY operator
The WingtraRAY is reserved for professional remote pilots specialised in mapping and topography. Waypoint360 lists certified operators filtered by location and mission type.
