How to Choose a Certified Professional Drone Operator

Certifications, insurance, gear: the key criteria for choosing the right professional drone operator.

Why Certification Is Non-Negotiable

In the European Union, operating a drone commercially is a regulated activity. Hiring an uncertified operator exposes you to:

  • Uninsured work (damage not covered by any policy)
  • Illegal flights (restricted zones, missing authorisations)
  • Unusable data (wrong resolution, missing calibration)

A certified professional operates within a legal framework, with a specific professional liability insurance policy and appropriate flight authorisations.

Certifications to Verify

Registration with the national aviation authority

Every drone operator above 250 g must be registered with the national aviation authority (DGAC in France, CAA in the UK, LBA in Germany) and display their registration number on the aircraft.

Remote pilot licence (Specific Category)

For professional operations in populated areas or near infrastructure, the operator must hold a remote pilot competency certificate for the Specific Category (STS-01 or STS-02 in Europe).

UAS Operator number

Since January 2021, all operators must be registered as UAS operators on their national authority's portal. Ask for this number before booking.

Professional liability insurance (mandatory)

Specific drone professional liability insurance is mandatory for all commercial operations. Request a copy of the insurance certificate before any intervention.

Professional Skills to Assess

Experience in your sector

A solar panel thermal inspection specialist has different skills to a wedding videographer. Ask for sector-specific references (inspection reports, portfolio videos, survey examples).

Appropriate equipment

Equipment must match your needs:

  • Thermal FLIR camera for infrared surveys
  • Multispectral sensor for precision agriculture
  • 3-axis stabiliser and 4K camera for professional video

Deliverables and file formats

Ensure delivered files are compatible with your software (GeoTIFF for GIS, LAS for LiDAR, MP4/ProRes for video).

Mission report quality

A professional operator provides a structured flight log and mission report, not just raw files.
