What the advertised flight time is worth, how to read a battery's watt-hours, and what airlines allow in the cabin.

The advertised flight time is not the one you will get

Manufacturers measure flight time under the most favourable conditions: hovering, no wind, mild temperature, discharged to the very end. That is none of your flights.

What cuts it, in order:

Count on two thirds of the advertised figure for real flying, and half of it in sustained wind or cold weather.

The second battery is the first accessory to buy

Before filters, before the bag, often before the memory card. The reason is not total flight time: it is that the first outing is for understanding the place, and the second is for filming what you saw there. With a single battery, you come home having scouted without having shot.

⚠️ A non-official battery is a bad calculation on a recent aircraft. Modern aircraft talk to their battery to know their charge and compute the return margin. A battery that cannot hold that conversation turns a saving of a few tens of euros into an aircraft that lands where it should not.

⛔ Watt-hours, and why that number decides your trip

Every battery label carries a value in Wh, watt-hours. It is not a performance figure, it is the number airlines look at.

And in every case:

  • Cabin only. A lithium battery never travels in the hold
  • Protected contacts: original cap, tape, or one bag per battery
  • Partial charge recommended, a full battery being more sensitive
  • The number of spare batteries is capped, and the cap depends on the airline

⚠️ Check with the airline before leaving. Thresholds differ, and the check happens at the desk, when it is too late to reorganise.

What wears a battery out, and what preserves it

  • Do not leave it full between outings. Recent aircraft self-discharge to a storage level after a few days: that is a feature, not a fault
  • Do not run it flat in flight, repeatedly
  • Do not charge it straight after the flight, while it is still warm
  • Do not store it in a vehicle, in summer or winter

A battery loses capacity with cycles. That is normal and gradual. What is not: any swelling, however slight. A swollen battery is not recharged, it goes to a collection point.

The charger, and the false need

A multi-charger does not charge faster: it generally charges one after the other. Its real benefit is having a single plug to connect and no order to watch.

The real time saved is elsewhere: one more battery, charged in advance.
